THE HUNT
The Hunt came out last year surrounded in controversy – the exact sort of controversy you’re able to muster up yourself if you’re a production company that knows how to get people to want to see a movie about liberal elites hunting conservatives for sport. Is it controversial? I suppose it might be if you’re the sort of person who gets mad at movies. The liberals are bad guys and the good guys are conservatives but also the movie is about conservatives being hunted, so there’s something for everybody to get pretend upset about.
It’s a pretty fun film, like The Hunger Games but with jokes about Jon Stewart liberals that already felt outdated even though I watched the movie in the same year it came out. In fifteen years time its politics will feel absolutely ancient, like all of the Michael Moore jokes in Team America: World Police and also like the rest of Team America: World Police.
Maybe you haven’t heard of The Hunt. Maybe you’ve forgotten that The Huntwas stirring up controversy in early 2020. Maybe you’re wondering why it is you didn’t catch The Hunt at the movies. It debuted in cinemas on the 13th of March, 2020. New theory: the coronavirus was a bi-partisan effort to stop anybody from seeing this movie in which neither red-staters nor blue-staters escape unharmed.
The Hunt is directed by Craig Zobel, who directed this year’s buzzy HBO series Mare of Easttown. A bunch of conservative types – conspiracy theorists, the sorts of blondes that would get jobs on FOX News, rednecks, etc, etc. – wake up in the middle of a forest, where they’re being hunted by unseen folks, who turn out to be a variety of rich lefty stereotypes. The only one who seems to know how to cope with this situation is Crystal (Betty Gilpin) a stern, quiet woman who knows how to use a shotgun.
Where would I fit into this movie about conservatives being hunted for sport by the liberal elite? There’s only one place that I can see myself in a movie like this, and an additional scene would have to be added, let’s say part way through the credits where if I was in a different franchise I'd be approached by Samuel L. Jackson trying to recruit me.
IF I WERE IN 'THE HUNT' I WOULD: BE HUNTED FOR SPORT BY THE GLOBAL ELITE
