IT COMES AT NIGHT
Sitting down to watch It Comes At Night I was so excited. What comes at night? Some kind of zombie? I bet it’s some kind of night zombie that comes at night. And then the film starts and you're surprised by the A24 logo and it hits you “Aww, I think the real monsters might be themselves.”
I’ll be honest, sometimes you can be in the complete wrong headspace to consume a film – you want something else entirely to what you get. I saw Zodiac in cinemas with my film going pals and when it ended we turned to each other and before we could say “what an incredible film” some people we knew from work, who happened to be seated a few rows in front of us, stood up and said, so loudly, “WHAT A SHIT FILM. THEY DIDN’T EVEN CATCH THE BAD GUY.”
That’s me watching this film. I’m the one yelling “THEY DIDN’T EVEN CATCH THE ZODIAC KILLER” as my complaint. “THIS MOVIE WASN’T THE MOVIE I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE WHEN I STARTED WATCHING IT” as if that’s a criticism you can level at something. “I CLICKED ON THE WRONG FILM – THREE STARS.”
It Comes At Night stars Joel Edgerton, Australia’s answer to the question “What was that guy’s name again? He was in that thing, no not that guy, the other guy. Not, the Avatar dude. The other guy. BI-LO Russell Crowe. Yeah, that’s him! Joel Edgerton.”
There’s a highly contagious disease in the world that is forcing everybody to have to stay inside. And also that’s the plot of It Comes At Night. There’s a family in the woods, hiding out because who knows what’s out there. It’s a pretty interesting film, although there are times when the movie feels like you can’t figure out how to skip a cut scene in The Last of Us.
Edgerton plays Paul, who is looking after his family in this nightmare virus-ravaged world by hiding out in the woods. He’ll occasionally pop out of the house during the daytime, where he encounters other folks trying to survive. So where would I fit in? I’m sure in his travels carefully scouring the world for food and supplies it would be possible that Paul might stumble across one, Peter Jones.
