FREAKY

Freaky is from the director of Happy Death Day and it follows the same formula of taking an eighties high concept comedy trope and applying it to a teen slasher film. This time it’s the body-swap comedy of Freaky Friday and Big and asking the question “What if a teenager swapped bodies with a serial killer?” The teenager is played by Kathryn Newton and the serial killer is played by Vince Vaughn so for me the big question that should be at heart of this movie is “What’s going on with Vince Vaughn?”

Vince does not look like he’s having a good time playing a character that is essentially Rob Schneider in The Hot Chick. If you want to feel bad, have a gander at Vince’s imdb page from 2011 onwards. It’s something. It’s also why he’s perfect casting from Blumhouse because you kind of forget that his career has been cooked for a decade. Honestly, try and remember anything he’s been in since Couples Retreat. Unfinished Business? Delivery Man? Term Life? Brawl in Cell Block 99? The Internship? A Case of You? I Googled these and even I’m convinced I made up half those titles.

Vince Vaughn has been here before in this weird career space, right after he broke out with Swingers, he went through a really rough patch of trying to be a dramatic actor. Never forget he played Norman Bates in Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot remake of Psycho.

It should be way more fun seeing Vince pop up in this movie. It’s not though. It’s all a bit of a bummer. Unlike Happy Death Day which was a pretty fun version of this sort of goofy ass premise, Freaky just doesn’t have it.

Where would I fit into Freaky? Well, if everybody is switching bodies all over the place then there’s no reason to think that ol’ Peter Jones can’t get in on that action. I am just as capable of being caught on the wrong end of an ancient curse that throws me into the body of someone completely unexpected.

IF I WERE IN 'FREAKY' I WOULD: FEEL BAD EVERY TIME I SEE VINCE VAUGHN IN A MOVIE THESE DAYS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT WAS MY FAULT OR NOT THAT HE ENDED UP THERE.
